Numărul CAS (engl. CAS Registry Number, CAS = Chemical Abstracts Service) este un standard internațional de înregistrare și identificare pentru substanțele chimice descrise în literatura de specialitate, printre altele numărându-se elemente chimice, biosecvențe, aliaje și polimeri. Numărul CAS permite identificarea izomerilor diferiți ai unei molecule, fiecare izomer primind un număr diferit.
Numărul CAS conține trei componente numerice, separate de cratimă. Primul număr poate avea între două și șapte cifre, al doilea număr are două cifre. Cea de-a treia componentă reprezintă cifra de control, ce asigură validitatea numărului de înregistrare.
În prezent, registrul conține peste 81 de milioane de substanțe chimice înregistrate, respectiv 66 milioane de proteine și secvențe de ADN. În medie, registrul este îmbogățit cu aproximativ 15.000 de substanțe zilnic.
Sediul de administrație a „Chemical Abstracts Service”, care a fost întemeiat în 1965 de societatea „American Chemical Society”, se află în Columbus, Ohio și SUA.
